Presentation
of potentialities

  • Post-project, AFAD has harnessed the creative momentum generated by “Arts and Crafts Today,” translating it into a series of pedagogical assignments that challenge students to reinterpret traditional motifs within contemporary contexts. The theme of ornamentation in glass and the adaptation of traditional crafts into modern jewelry design are just two examples of how the project’s influence has permeated the academy’s curriculum. Moreover, the connections forged during the workshops have blossomed into enduring collaborations, such as the glass symposia at Rona (new members), which continue to enrich the educational experience.

  • Looking ahead, AFAD is fostering the growth of these educational networks, with plans for art educators from St. Etienne to participate in an international jewelry project and a workshop at Šperkstret (International Jewelwery workshop and conference in September 2024 in Bratislava).

  • Participation of AFAD educators in a project dedicated to the revitalization of glass production in Portugal. Porto was inspired by a similar project realized by educators with AFAD and invited them as supervisors and advisors. (In progress.)

  • Participation of textile departments from AFAD at the BIP Contextile exhibition in Porto in September 2024.

These initiatives underscore AFAD’s commitment to evolving its teaching methodologies, ensuring that the legacy of the project not only endures but also propels forward the pedagogical evolution in art schools.

The project enrich teaching practices by:

  • Encouraging Active Learning: Moving beyond lectures to more immersive, hands-on experiences that engage students directly with their craft.

  • Promoting Cross-Disciplinary Learning: Integrating different fields of study to foster a broader understanding of art and design.

  • Facilitating Industry Partnerships: Building connections with professionals and industries related to the arts to provide students with real-world insights and opportunities.

  • Expanding Cultural Horizons: Encouraging international collaboration to expose students to global art practices and perspectives.

  • Showcasing Student Work: Providing platforms for students to exhibit their work, which is essential for professional development and public engagement.

By incorporating these elements into their teaching, educators can create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that prepares students for the evolving demands of the art world. The AFAD workshop’s methodology and outcomes offer a blueprint for how art education can be both rooted in tradition and forward-looking, fostering an educational space where innovation thrives.
